It’s fine if people get “dumber” by relying on AI, because AI is already smarter than any individual human in a lot of ways.

Would Einstein know how to code? Probably not. Would he speak Chinese? Probably not. But today, that doesn’t matter as much. AI can fill in those gaps. It’s the same reason nobody cares if you’re bad at mental math anymore. Calculators exist. They calculate faster and more accurately than any person can. So if AI can think, write, translate, code, and explain things better than most people, why is relying on it automatically a bad thing?

Then ask AI instead of a doctor when you have cancer too, dummy.

Well, part of the value of humans thinking by ourselves is that we are the best at combining pieces of knowledge across areas of thinking in a variety of ways. Ok that was vaguer than it sounded in my head. I mean that when you ask a generative AI a question about a complicated or non-scientific topic, it makes a generalization about what subject area, hobby or interest or culture of discourse you are looking for answers from or about, and closely approximates answering like a knowledgeable but non-extreme member of that hobby or subject area. Whereas in a forum of humans, like here or reddit, each person's answer is brimming with subjectivity in a way that makes it easy to spot what attitudes they have that you may or may not personally like. There may be hidden meanings behind your question that people can infer and tailor their responses to account for that AI won't. https://polls.io/en/sqmmh/vote So don't fully rely on AI to make judgment calls or decide when a popular opinion isn't what you will end up believing or tell you every nuance that the conversation around a controversial topic isn't talked about enough, especially because you know best what assumptions or value judgments you are going into a conversation with. Basically it's not automatically bad, but it's a big simplification that "AI can think better than most people." ALSO practicing thinking for yourself throughout your life is very helpful for maintaining your critical thinking. Don't become one of the gen z interns who can't have a conversation for a job interview without typing what to say next into ChatGPT!
