Enzo Maresca is expected to leave Chelsea following a mid-season slump in results.
Chelsea are yet to confirm or comment on the possible departure of Maresca after 18 months as head coach, but sources believe the Italian will leave his post today, three days before the club face Manchester City.
Maresca won two trophies – the Club World Cup and the Europa Conference League – during his time at Chelsea, and the plan has been for a review of his position at the end of this season.
But matters have come to a head in what some describe as “a two-week unravelling”, during which Chelsea have won one of their past seven Premier League games.
Maresca raised questions about his position following the one league victory in that run – over Everton – by claiming he had experienced the worst 48 hours of his career at Chelsea and suggesting he did not feel supported.
The comments not only angered some of those in power at Chelsea, but also puzzled board members and staff who were in the dark about exactly what Maresca meant.
Maresca refused to explain his comments publicly and privately, and the relationship between the Italian and Chelsea is said to have deteriorated to the point where it became irretrievable.
