It’s a dilemma for companies: cooperate with the police and users lose trust, or protect privacy and risk disasters like this.

I think it's quite easy. Snitching should not be part of anybody's terms of service. If they want to ban somebody, that's OK. But running to the police every time somebody says something moronic on the Internet clearly doesn't scale.
